The Pike’s Peak Advertising Federation recently held their 2008 Addy awards, and the video David edited for Visual Image won “Best of Show.”

Congratulations to the team at Visual Image, Daniel Hook (graphics), and David for a job well done. Now, the piece will compete regionally and we’re sure to keep you posted.

Using social media for event promotion

February 10th, 2009

LinkedIn snippet

LinkedIn has recently added an “event” feature, so I tried it out for our Red One launch party. You can invite up to 50 of your contacts, and they of course offer a chance to advertise to the general public. I was seriously considering it, but for some reason you can’t limit the geography to any city in Oklahoma – they had no listing whatsoever. Strange. They do have Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston, Austin & San Antonio. Base price is $10 CPM ($25 minimum), with $3 additional for the geography targeting. Other targeting includes company size, job function, industry, seniority, gender and age. (Seniority will run you an extra $6)

Facebook, on the other hand, offered me no way to pay to promote, had no restrictions on # of invites, and even offered to let me upload email addresses of people I’m not already connected to. Plus, they have a place to add photos, videos, links, etc. It was a much nicer end-user experience, in my opinion. Click here to experience the Facebook version.

OKC fails Nielsen DTV test

February 2nd, 2009

MediaDailyNews reports that Nielsen is not reporting the overnights for January 29th because “a sufficient number of households in the market are not capable of receiving digital TV signals.”

No word as to the long-term impact on OKC as a metered market.

We’re very pleased to announce the public debut of our new RED ONE camera with a hands-on event scheduled for Wednesday, February 18th, 2009 from 11a – 3p at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.

We’ll be demonstrating the workflow from acquisition to post and talking about the implications of shooting hi-rez digital images for HD or even SD delivery.

Jon Shryock is our lighting partner for the event. He’ll have a wide array of instruments lighting up the demo area, and might even bring a few other toys.

A light lunch will be served. Please RSVP to RedParty@CMPedge.com

TV Week: Winnercomm sold to Outdoor Channel

January 14th, 2009
.!.

The rumours are true – Tulsa’s troubled Winnercomm has been sold to the Outdoor Channel.

Here’s hoping this is a happy ending for our colleagues there – it’s been a rough year, with a round of layoffs that hit the editors hard. It is interesting that they did have to give up Skycam in the deal, which was perhaps the best hard asset they had available. No word yet about how the sale will impact the ad agency part of Winner, or how the integration will be handled.

David and Don will present a brief overview of some of the technical challenges involved in creating content for the new scoreboard at the University of Oklahoma. If you haven’t seen it, the shape of the screen is 48 x 9, which is more-or-less 3 HD screens side-by-side.

The meeting will be held Tuesday, January 13th, 6pm at the Ronald J. Norick downtown library. You can get more details by clicking here.

OU Pregame video screens in Dolphin Stadium

January 7th, 2009

bcs_pregame

UPDATE: You can see in the photo above that a tiny bit of the video did make air on Fox at the end of this interview.

We just got word that OU’s pregame video screened nicely on the scoreboard at Dolphin Stadium. Edited for Visual Image by David, the graphics were done by Greg at Antifreeze Design. This was a redesign for Greg, since the Dolphins’ board presents at 720P in 16 x 9, and the OU board is 48 x 9, but he managed to crank it out in time.

For what it’s worth, the video got lots of compliments from the stadium crew. We hope at least 1/2 of the 75,000+ fans enjoy the video tomorrow night at the BCS Championship Game!

Special thanks to Pete Gergley, manager of scoreboard operations, for his help on the tech specs for their Daktronics board.

Back to the Blog

January 7th, 2009

Don here…

So, it’s official: I’ve been slacking in the blog department. While not really a New Year’s resolution, I am committing to at least one post per week in 2009. I know I have at least one reader in Tulsa who may quit giving me grief with this announcement, assuming I follow through.

In other news, look for a redesign of the website sometime this quarter, with a move back to a more traditional home page combined with this blog. We’ll have some announcements regarding our new RED camera, some exciting news on the production front, and perhaps a few other surprises in the weeks and months to come.

Thanks for reading,

–Don

2 Days @ Apple Camp

July 16th, 2008

Apple Camp

Well, it was actually just two mornings, but the Stephens boys attended two sessions at the Apple Store

Night of the Comet movie download Pure Country the movie

at Penn Square this week: music (GarageBand) and movies (iMovie). We’ve played around with GarageBand before so they knew most of the tricks, but they both really had a lot of fun creating their own movie. Each boy was teamed up with a partner – Devon made a music video (with lasers!) and Nate did a drama about alien invasion (also with lasers!) Nate’s even had a surprise ending that showed some good creativity, but unfortunately the DVD they burned was missing all the dialog. I think we’re going to rip it back into iMovie and see if we can do some ADR. This could be the next generation of CMP here!

My overall impressions of the “camp” were good. I signed the boys up knowing that there would be a bit of a sales pitch, but it was minimal. The leaders had a script they were following, and had to show us the iTunes store and how one could purchase things (with a parent’s permission, of course!) If we weren’t already Mac owners, I’m sure I’d already be feeling some pressure to at least consider an Apple computer, and I feel confident that was one of the primary goals of the event. The leaders were obviously teaching the classes for the first time, but they were probably college-aged or slightly older and related well with the children. It was disappointing to not be able to experience Nate’s DVD the way he’d envisioned it, but that should be a lesson that sticks with him about checking his work. The boys now have cool Apple T-shirts, and a couple patches like the photo above. The only real negative about the event was the lack of chairs – we were standing for the entire 2.5 hours each day, which got a bit old.

DCal preps for OSU shoot

June 19th, 2008

Visual Image chose David for the AC position for this year’s Oklahoma State University football pregame HD video shoot. CMP will provide the 2nd HVX-200 (which David will operate) and a data wrangler for both cameras, and John Scarberry of Lone Star Film & Video will again DP.

Later, CMP will do the post for the video, cut to a Big & Rich tune. The pix above are from the scouting they did today.

Look ma – I’m a “real” entrepreneur!

June 18th, 2008

OKC Chamber Greater Grads logo

Don here again – I was honored today to host a table at the chamber’s Greater Grads lunch, where the topic was entrepreneurship in OKC. Renzi Stone at Saxum was one of the event hosts and there were several speakers, but I was at a table with several current college students so that I could chat informally with the group about being an entrepreneur here in Oklahoma City. Since the event was held at the fairgrounds, we had the traditional fair food of Indian taco, corndogs, and fried Twinkie! (Which isn’t that bad, actually, although I only ate half…)

The Greater Grads program is an initiative of the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber’s Education and Workforce Development division, and just happens to be managed by a friend of mine. They connect Oklahoma graduates with employers in the Oklahoma City region, which “will help Oklahoma City’s flourishing economy, creating even more opportunities in the years to come,” according to the website. Great idea!
